Sagres | Portugal

Sagres is known for 2 lookout points: The end of the world and the navigation school from Henry the navigator. Sagres is also known for its surf schools and surf beaches.

Navigation School

The navigation school contains a compass rose of 43 meters, carved into the ground.  The school also has a large path that you can follow to enjoy some magnificent views of the ocean. This pathway also leads you to 2 holes from which you can see the ocean through. When you’re lucky it even sprays water when there is a lot of wind.

The end of the world

The most important viewing point is the one with the lighthouse. This is the end of the world with vertical cliffs with a height of 75 meters.

Fun fact: The name is originated from the first navigators and colonizers. That point was the last thing they saw when they were traveling to the unknown world in front of them. Many believed the earth was flat so they thought they would sail to the edge of the world where there was only water. Luckily for them, it was not the end of the world but it is still a cool name (now I can say that I’ve seen the end of the world haha).

Praia do Amado

From there on, we rode off to Carrapateira in Bordeira to see the most famous surf beaches of the Algarve: Praia da Bordeira and Praia do Amado.

Fun fact: Praia do Amado is a good place to surf, I didn’t have a surfboard so I had to improvise! I decided to ride those waves with my air mattress! I was literally the only one with an air mattress on that beach (the colour did me no good). The looks the pros gave me, …  Beware, the water was freezing! After 10 seconds my toes were totally numb!

Praia da Bordeira

After this beach, we went to Praia da Bordeira and boy what a view!

Tip: Take your picnic with you while enjoying this incredible view.

Our next stop would have been the castle of Bordeira but after driving around for one hour and not finding it, we gave up and drove back to our hotel. On our way back, we passed Aljezur and saw its fortress.
