12 must do’s in Venice
Our last stop of my school’s 2013 Italy Itinerary is Venice! We took the boat to this city and spend a whole day in the city. Here are my must do’s when in Venice!
Check out my Instagram for more photos!
1) the Bridge of Sighs
The Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge’s Palace and the prison complex. This bridge was the last time convicts would see daylight and would sigh, thus the name.
Fun Fact: Casanova also walked on this bridge but could escape prison!
2) Doge’s Palace
The Doge’s Palace is a palace from the 14th century. It was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Venetian Republic. It is a museum today.
3) Piazza San Marco
The Basilica di San Marco, the Torre dell’ Orologio, and the Doge’s Palace can be found on the Piazza San Marco. The piazza is a beautiful place but it is filled with pigeons! Shame!
Warning: Public toilets are expensive! You have to pay €1.5 to be able to go to the toilet.
4) Basilica di San Marco
This church was the personal chapel of the Doge, and is the city’s cathedral since the 19th century. When we were there, the church was under construction which was a pity!
5) Campanile
The Campanile is a bell tower and is easily seen from the Piazza San Marco. The tower contains more than one bell and is part of a church.
6) Ca’ d’oro
The Ca’ d’Oro is a palace on the Grand Canal. It is one of the older palaces and is used as a museum now.
7) Rialto Bridge
The Rialto Bridge dates from the 16th century and bridges the Grand Canal. The bridge also gives you an amazing view of the canal. Go check out the Rialto market where you can buy fruit, vegetables, and fish.
8) Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is used by merchants and is the busiest waterway in Venice. The houses alongside the Grand Canal look beautiful, one of these houses used to be the home of Casanova!
9)Ponte dell’Accademia
The Ponte dell’Accademia is the only wooden bridge in Venice and is located next to the Gallerie dell’Accademia. The photo above was taken on the Ponte dell ‘Accademia.
10) Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
Santa Maria della Salute is visible when entering Venice by boat! This church was a plague church: it was built in honor of a plague free era. But they were wrong because the plague did return.
11) Gondola
Discover the channels of Venice on foot or by Gondola! Did you know that Venice consists of 120 small islands?
Price: €80 per person
12) Souvenir shopping in Venice
Don’t forget to go shopping in Venice! I bought a shirt from the Hard Rock Cafe shop and some Venetian masks!
