7 must do’s in Northern Crete

Rent a car, buy some snacks, wear your bikini and do a road trip through Northern Crete! Here are my must do’s when you’re in northern Crete!

P.S. Check out my Instagram for more photos!

1) Knossos

Go to Heraklion and visit Knossos, one of Europe’s oldest cities. I always loved history so I was so excited to see the Minoan Palace. I must say I was a bit disappointed as there was not much left. They did rebuild some places to show you how it would have looked like but I thought there would be more original buildings.

2) Koules Fortress

When visiting Heraklion, you can shop or visit museums but you can also visit Koules Fortress. The fortress lies in the old port of Heraklion and was built in the 13th century.

3) Sissi

Sissi is the town we stayed in. The town is small and is located right at the sea. Take a stroll to the center where you can shop in local shops or even get a foot pampering.

Tip: Bring some surf shoes with you! No sand here!

4) Spinalonga

When riding through Crete you’ll see a barren island called Spinalonga. It used to be a lepers colony until the ’60s. Today, the island is inhabited but can be visited. You’ll encounter empty streets, buildings, and fortresses.

5) White windmills

When driving in Crete, you’ll see a lot of white windmills. Some are already destroyed but some are still left in full glory! Go to the Lasithi Plateau to check them out! Don’t forget to do a pit stop in the middle of nowhere!

6) Party in Hersonissos

A lot of people go to Hersonissos to party. We drove through this city and it was so filthy! The trash from last night’s party in the street and drunk tourists everywhere. If you want to party, go to Hersonissos but if you want to stay in more rural Crete go to Sissi as we did!

In my opinion, Crete is more like a relaxing vacation than a culture trip. Maybe next time I’ll discover that southern Crete has more to offer!
