Opal Coast

When I was in Blankenberge (Belgium) with friends, we decided to do a day trip to the Opal Coast in France. The Opale Coast is very famous for its cliffs and view of Dover.

The Opal Coast (Côte d’Opale) is a French coastline next to the coastline of Belgium. The coastline is 120 kilometers long and consists of dunes, beaches, and cliffs. The most famous part of that coastline is the coastline between the 2 cliffs Cap Griz Nez and Cap Blanc Nez.  The cliffs of Cap Gris Nez are grey because it’s made out of sandstone, clay, and chalk while the cliffs of Cap Blanc Nez are white because it’s made of chalk only.

Fun Fact: If the wheater allows it, you can see the White Cliffs from Dover (England) right across the sea.

Cap Gris-Nez

Cap Griz Nez (Grey Nose Cape) is a 50-meters high cliff in Calais, northern France. When you’re standing on this cliff, it’s only 34 km to reach Dover, England. On top of Cap Gris-Nez, you can find a lighthouse and the ruins of a Tudor castle (Henry VII, 16th century).

Fun Fact:  Cap Gris Nez is a good place to collect fossils. I found a fossil when I was 11 years old!

Cap Blanc Nez

Cap Blanc Nez (White Nose Cape) is a 132 meters high in Calais, northern France. The cliff is made of chalk and is very similar to the cliffs of Dover (white color). Cap Blanc Nez also has an Obelisk of the Dover Patrol Monument. The obelisk is to commemorate the Dover Patrol which kept the Channel free from U-boats during WW1.
