11 Must do’s in Lot | France

The Lot Department has beautiful landscapes, gorges, rivers, villages, vineyards, and the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park. The Lot department is located north of the Midi-Pyrenees region, just east of the Dordogne department of Aquitaine. Here are my must do’s in Lot, France.

1) Cahors

Cahors is the capital of the Lot Department. When visiting Cahors, the number one must-see is the Pont Valentré (1308, UNESCO protected). Other must-sees are the Cathédrale Saint-Etienne, the center of Cahors, the old clock, the food market, and the large fountain where you can cool off.

2) Oradour-sur-Glane

Oradour-sur-Glane is preserved to look exactly as it did after what happened on June 10, 1944: charred remains of a village as well as the remains of nearly all of its inhabitants. The president decided to leave the village as such to have it as a memorial to the senseless loss of life during WWII. You will see the remnants of daily life: a sewing machine, a car parked in front of a house, and the village church. The Nazis trapped all women and children inside the church, to shoot and burn them alive. The men were dispersed in 5 barns to have the same faith. Only 5 adults, of which was one woman, survived the massacre.

Price: free of charge. €10 to enter the Centre de la Mémoire.

3) Bouzies (Bouzigues)

Bouziès is known for its castle and towpath to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. When crossing the bridge to Bouzies, you’ll see the Château des Anglais, a castle carved out of the rock.

Another must-do in Bouzies is the towpath alongside the river Lot. The towpath is once again carved out of the rock (the bottom of the cliffs) which makes it very interesting.

4) Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is one of the most beautiful villages in France and falls within the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Parc. The small town lies upon a cliff above the river Lot. You can just walk from the towpath in Bouzies to the small town. Once you’re in the town, try to discover the small streets of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie.

Don’t forget to check out the ruins of an ancient castle on top of the town. It will give you an amazing view of the river Lot, the town and more. On your way down, you can do a stop at the small church which was once part of the castle.

5) Wine a lot in Lot

As I’ve already said, Lot is known for its wine, and guess what? There is a wine with my name (Laure) on it! Vignoble Château Laur! I say: the best wine there is 😉

6) Causses du Quercy (Parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy)

The Causses du Quercy cover an area largely within the Lot department of the Midi-Pyrénées region. Villages such as Rocamadour, and Bouzies are located in this park.

“Quercy’s Black Triangle” is an area with an amazingly preserved sky ensuring incredible views of the stars and planets. A dark area with the lowest light pollution in France due to the absence of a city and the limited number of villages in this region!

Fun Fact: Part of the historic route to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain crosses the Causses du Quercy between Figeac and Cahors

7) Swim in the rivers

River Célé is a bathing spot, with beaches in Cabrerets

8) Sunflowers

Well, everyone has to take a photo between the sunflowers when they are in France right? Luckily for us, you can find sunflowers everywhere you go. Just show some respect and do not pluck the flowers.

9) Market

Go enjoy some local markets: local produce, antiques, brocanterie, and more!

10) Good food, good mood

My favorite restaurants in the Lot Department: La Roue in Cabrerets, Gaec De Larcher Ferme de Larcher in Coer-de-Causse, the restaurant of Logis Hôtel La Garissade in Coeur-de-Causse. Try to eat the duck, Lamb or my favorite: pavé de boeuf from local farmers.

11) Wildlife

Drive slowly as you can spot many wildlife during the night like boars and deer during nightfall and early morning!

Bedankt!
