9 must do’s in Chiang Rai

We spend 3 days in Chiang Rai and we managed to do a lot in these few days. Chiang Rai is quite small but worth the visit. Here are my 9 must do’s when you’re in Chiang Rai.

1) White temple

So the most famous monument in Chiang Rai is the white temple. Its real name is Wat Rong Khun, but everyone calls it the white temple due to the color. The temple is built by an artist who wanted to have a different temple than the other temples. If you’re inside the white temple, go look for Michael Jackson or Superman. The heads of Deadpool and Wolverine can be found hanging in a tree.

Entrance fee: 50 baht

Fun fact: We got photographed by many Asians. Some even asked to be on a photo with us, especially with Eva who has blonde hair!

2) Black temple Ban Daam

This is the dark twin of the white temple. Ban Daam is actually a house and not a temple. There are several black houses that contain the remains of dead animals like the skins of crocodiles and snakes. I didn’t find it that special. The white and blue temple are just so beautiful with all the details but Ban Daam is still worth visiting.

Entrance fee: 80 baht

3) Blue temple

So take a cab and visit the blue temple! This temple is just so beautiful! The big white Buddha on the inside is beautiful but don’t forget to take a look at the entrance gate and the little temple behind the blue temple.

Entrance fee: FREE

4) Mae Fah Luang Garden

The Mae Fah Luang Garden is so beautiful! The garden has over a hundred different flowers. The garden is at the top of a mountain so you can also enjoy some magnificent views. Take your camera with you and relax! Want to have some adventure while visiting? Go on a treetop walk adventure!

Entrance fee: 90 Baht

Tip: Go on a butterfly hunt!

5) Tea Plantation in Chiang Rai

The Choui Fong Tea Plantation is one of the largest tea plantations in Chiang Rai with over 40km of tea bushes. One tea house also has a shop where you can buy equipment to make tea, see tea bushes, and where you can get a free sample to taste.

Entrance fee: FREE (tea not included)

6) Cat cafe

Here kitty kitty kitty!
So Chiang Rai has a cat cafe! I have never been to a cat cafe so this was my first experience! The cats were a bit afraid of humans and just wanted to sleep. Relatable.

Fun fact: You can also buy some cat snacks for them.

7) Night Baazar

So Chiang Rai has a night Baazar. In this Bazaar, you can shop souvenirs but you can also get some food. There is also a little temple where performers can sing and entertain the shoppers. Lovely for a night out! You can shop chopsticks, those typical “I went to Thailand” pants (which I also bought haha), and those famous rose ice creams you see on the internet!

8) Visit the Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is the location where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet and where the Ruak and Mekong rivers merge. We didn’t have enough time to visit it because of the long drive (50 km from Chiang Rai). But if I ever go back to Thailand or if I go to Laos or Myanmar, I sure want to check this out!

9) Town’s clock tower

Chiang Rai’s clock tower is a golden clock tower that also gives a light show in the evening. Unfortunately for us, the low season means restoration time. Just like in Bangkok, the clock was under restoration.

I hope this will give you a great list of must do’s in Chiang Rai! If I missed something, let me know in the comments!
