Tsavo West National Park Safari Guide Kenya

Wildlife, best times & tips

Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic safari destinations, known for dramatic landscapes, volcanic terrain, and unique natural sights like Mzima Springs. Located between Nairobi and Mombasa, Tsavo West offers a mix of wildlife viewing and striking scenery, where you can spot elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, and hippos in a more rugged and varied environment than many other parks. This Tsavo West National Park safari guide covers everything you need to plan your visit, including what to expect, wildlife highlights, the best time to visit, and practical travel tips.

Where to stay in Tsavo?

We stayed in two places in Tsavo. We stayed at the Rock Side Camp (2 nights) and Maneaters Camp (1 night). Maneaters Camp is more glamping (sturdy big tent), while you have a little cottage at Rock Side Camp. At both accommodations, we could spot animals at the watering hole, I mean swimming pool! At night, we even heard hyenas passing by (the advice is not to leave your accommodation between certain hours at night).

What wildlife can be spotted in Tsavo West National Park?

1) Hippos

When we followed the river, we eventually saw some hippopotamuses, but not that many. This is due to the extreme drought in 2008 & 2009. 90% of the hippos died then, and they are still trying to repopulate.

2) Elephants

After a while, we encountered an elephant climbing the nearest mountain. “When it’s going to rain, the elephants go up the mountain”, our guide said.

3) Giraffes

At a sudden moment, there was a big group of giraffes near the road. With every minute passing by, another giraffe appeared. Can you spot all 6 giraffes below?

4) Lions

We almost went out of the park until our guide got a call. Someone had spotted another lioness, but she was in a remote area that is known for not having much wildlife. This would mean most likely the last animal of our safari trip. What do we do? We all decided to turn back to see it. We were in awe. The lioness was eating a zebra (something you just cannot see in the zoo). Our guide informed us that the zebra was killed at around 11 AM (we arrived at 4 PM), yet there was no smell. Well, lions eat the intestines first to prevent the corpse from decaying. They also eat out the eyes of their prey immediately because it’s the juiciest part of their prey; you can call it a delicacy. Afterwards, the lioness sat down under a tree to regain her strength and to wait for the other lionesses to return with the alpha lion (which we did not see, unfortunately).

5) Leopards

When we were on our way to the exit gate and believed we wouldn’t see a leopard on this safari trip, our luck changed. The guide told us to be very quiet and not make any sound. The young leopard was right in front of us. The leopard decided to pass our jeep (1-meter distance!) before going into the bushes. When the guide drove away, he told us that a leopard could get into the jeep in 3 seconds and kill everyone if someone had made a sound. Definitely a rule to remember.

With this, I can finally say that I’ve seen the African Big 5 in the wild! Dream come true!

Mzima Springs

We had our lunch at Mzima Springs in Tsavo West National Park. In Mzima Springs, you can enjoy the view of an area covered in dried-up lava. You can also visit a water tank. If you’re inside the tank, you can see a part underwater and a part above water. Unfortunately, we spotted no hippos due to the drought.

Safari Practical Tips

Driver & Guide

You can’t drive your own car into Tsavo West. You’re obligated to go with a licensed driver and guide. You can easily arrange a safari tour at your hotel, but best to plan with an agency. We did it with our travel agency in advance.

Get up early or sleep in

The best safaris are the ones in the early morning or late afternoon. That’s when the animals are most active. Around noon, all animals will take shelter to keep cool. We did a day safari in Tsavo West. We found that there were fewer animals in these parks than in the other ones we visited.

Tip: Drink before your safari, 3 cups of black tea to stay hydrated during the safari.

What to wear on a safari?

Light, breathable clothing is best due to the tropical climate, and do safaris in neutral colours (beige, brown, and green).

What to bring on a safari?

Make sure to bring these top 5 items on your safari trip:

  • A pair of binoculars: to see all wildlife up close.
  • Camera: to take amazing photos of your trip!
  • Sunscreen: don’t get sunburned
  • Malaria pills & mosquito repellent: There is a high risk of malaria throughout Kenya. Prevention through malaria tablets and strict mosquito repellent measures (DEET, mosquito nets) is essential. The risk is highest during and after the rainy season (June-December).
  • Hat or cap: for sun protection
