Senegal Travel Guide

Best things to do, itineraries & tips

Senegal is a country in West Africa with Dakar being the country’s capital. The country was famous for its Rally Dakar race, but after the race changed location, the country lost a major tourist income. Senegal wasn’t my first African country, but when visiting, I underwent a culture shock. To see so many people in bad living circumstances made me more aware of my privileges. During our trip, we decided to give back something to the villages by buying them supplies or food. So when you’re visiting those countries, try bringing some old clothes with you to give to the villages! They will most certainly enjoy it!

The best time to visit Senegal is during the dry season from November to May/June, offering warm, sunny weather with temperatures around 25°C-30°C, making it ideal for beaches, birdwatching, and sightseeing. It’s the perfect escape from colder climates, with December to February as High Season.

An ideal trip to Senegal requires 10 to 14 days to experience its culture, history, and nature without rushing. A 7-day trip covers the highlights (Dakar, Gorée Island, & Pink Lake), while 2 weeks allows for other visits such as Bandia reserve, Casamance region, or Saint-Louis.

🏖️ Can you combine safari and beach in one trip in Senegal?

Yes, many travelers combine a wildlife safari and a beach holiday in one trip to Senegal. Combine Bandia Nature Reserve with the coastal beaches and towns of Saly Portudal and M’Bour.

🚙 How to get around Senegal?

Popular transport includes minibuses, buses, trains, taxis, and private drivers. I recommend a private driver as it’s more comfortable and somewhat safer.
