1. Dijon

Dijon is the capital of Côte-d’Or. We didn’t visit Dijon due to not having enough time. When you have time, make sure to taste the mustard of Dijon.

2. Beaune

Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy and Côte-d’Or (read further to number 3). What you should really check out when in Beaune is Hôtel Dieu. Hôtel Dieu was once a hospital for the poor. The roof is supposed to be very beautiful. We didn’t have the time to visit it but e could see bits and pieces when walking around town. Make sure to also see the cathedral and the old wall.

3. Vineyards de Côte-d’Or

Beaune lies in the middle of the vineyards of the Côte-d’Or. Make sure to visit Pinot Noir or Chardonnay when you have the chance. We followed the Route des Grand Crus where we saw many vineyards. Just breathtaking.

4. Flavigny-sur-Ozerain

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is a small town worth the visit. The town was given to Falvinius by Ceaser. is named after the Roman Flavius. The old abbey is now a candy factory for the world-famous Les Anis de Flavigny (aniseed-flavored pastilles). Make sure to enjoy a free candy tour and to buy some sweets! Don’t forget to also check out the Porte du Bourg, the Porte du Val, and the Crypte.

Fun Fact: Some scenes from the movie Chocolat were shot here.

5. Alésia

Alésia was once a Gallic town but was conquered by Julius Ceasar during the Gallic Wars. Check out some ruins, a statue of the Gaulish leader Vercingetorix, and the old battlefield.

6. Chateau de Bussy-Rabutin

This castle belonged to Roger de Rabutin, Comte de Bussy. He was once a great soldier who fell into disgrace. The castle holds many paintings that he made during his exile.

7. Abbaye de Fontenay

The abbey of Fontenay (1119) sure is worth the visit. It’s supposed to be one of the most beautiful abbeys in France and I can’t contradict that.

Fun Fact: This abbey is the oldest abbey in France.

8. Semur-en-Auxois

Semur-en-Auxois is a lovely medieval town that you can visit. The town was once divided by a fortress to separate the bourgeoisie from the poor. You can still visit one of its towers.
