When is the Cologne Christmas Market?
Dates tend to vary year by year but it is generally open from the end of November until just before Christmas. The 2024 Christmas Market dates for Cologne are November 18 to December 23, 2024.
Where is the Cologne Christmas Market?
Cologne Christmas Market is not just one market; it’s a collection of six themed markets each with its own theme and delicious treats. Walk to the different markets or take the Christmas train between markets!
1) Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market
This Christmas market is around the Cologne Cathedral and 10 min away from the train station. Check out the Christmas tree in the center of the market with live music performances.
2) Heinzels Wintermärchen (The Gnome Market)
The Gnome Market is split into two sections: Alter Markt and Heumarkt. Check out the Ferris wheel, carrousel, and ice skating rink, and try spotting the little gnome figurines scattered throughout the market.
Location: Old Town, about 200 meters from the Cathedral
3) Markt der Engel (The Angel Market)
If you’re a fan of unique, handmade gifts and twinkling white lights, Angel Market is your place. Check out the angels on horseback wandering through the market.
Location: Neumarkt
4) Cologne’s Hafen Weihnachtsmarkt (The Harbor Market)
The Harbor Market has a maritime theme. It’s smaller and more intimate than the other markets. The stalls resemble boats, and you’ll find crafts with a seaside twist.
Location: Near the Chocolate Museum
5) Cologne’s Nikolausdorf (St. Nicholas Village)
Nikolausdorf has wooden stalls and brings you right back in time. The market is centered around St. Nicholas.
Location: Rudolfplatz
6) Cologne’s Stadtgarten Christmas Market
The Stadtgarten Christmas Market is located in a park. The stalls here change weekly, so there’s always something new to discover.
Location: Stadtgarten Park
Things to Do and See at Cologne Christmas Market
There isn’t too much to do at a Christmas market besides eat, drink, shop, and have a good time. However, Cologne has more to give! See below my must do’s when you’re at the Cologne Christmas Market.
Tip: Bring cash. Many stalls do not take cards so make sure to bring cash with you.
1) Hop on the Mini Christmas Train
Super special: Cologne’s Christmas markets are connected with a mini hop-on, hop-off Christmas train (leaves every 15 minutes).
2) Food
Enjoy some typical German foods. Check out the many stands and pick what you like! Try out the Bratwurst (my favorite and classic), Krakauer wurst, Raclette (melted cheese over bread or potatoes – heaven), currywurst, fries, reibekuchen, cinnamon rolls, traditional German gingerbread cookies (Lebkuchen), chocolate, Baumkuchen (a layered tree-shaped cake), hot chestnuts.and many more.
3) Drinks
For drinks, you can drink gluhwein, hot chocolate, Christmas Punch or something new I tried: Hot Aperol Spritz!
4) Get a themed mug
One of the best souvenirs you can get from a Christmas market is a mug. Drinks at German Christmas markets come in mugs or glasses. When you order your first drink you’ll need to ‘buy’ the mug/glass. If you like the cup and want to keep it as a souvenir then you can (that’s what I did). Otherwise, when you’re done drinking you bring back the cup and get your deposit back. Each market in Cologne has its own unique mug design.
5) Do some Christmas Shopping
Shop your snow globes, gingerbread houses, woolen products, crafts or Christmas tree ornaments. You can also shop for some gifts!
6) Cologne Cathedral
Cologne Cathedral is part of the Christmas Market, which can not be unseen. The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is the tallest twin-spired church in the world, the second tallest church in Europe after Ulm Minster, and the third tallest church of any kind in the world.
Cologne Germany Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany. From twinkling lights and aromatic mulled wine to handcrafted gifts and festive entertainment, the Cologne Christmas markets offer a heartwarming holiday experience for travelers of all ages.
