6 Must do’s in Épernay | France

Épernay is near Reims and is surely a must-do. This city is the place to see the grand street with all the champagne houses. Choose one and visit its caves and do some champagne tasting.

@lifeofapassion

You can’t visit the Champagne region and not visit the Avenue de Champagne where several iconic brands have their headquarters ánd tasting venues. 🥂 There are over 200 million bottles of champagne beneath this street, making it even richer than the Champs-Élysées. The first house on the avenue to open its doors to the public was Moët & Chandon way back at the start of the 19th century. Tip: Enjoy a glass of Perrier-Jouët on their terrase. 🥂🍾 #champagne #champagneregion #france #reims #epernay #travel #reizen #lifeofapassion #champagneregion #épernay #epernaytourisme

1) Avenue de Champagne

You can’t visit the region and not come to this grand street in Épernay where several iconic brands have their headquarters. You could say it is Champagne’s spiritual home, with extravagant manifestations of the wealth that the industry brought these winemakers in the 18th and 19th centuries.

There are some 200 million bottles of champagne beneath this street, which we’re told makes it even richer than the Champs-Élysées. The first house on the avenue to open its doors to the public was Moët & Chandon way back at the start of the 19th century; it would be a shame not to drop in for a visit and pick up a couple of bottles!

2) Visit a grand Champagne House: Perrier-Jouët

Must do in Épernay? Visit a Champagne house! Moët & Chandon, Mercier and De Castellane. We however went for a lesser-known champagne house: Perrier-Jouët. Personally, the Perrier-Jouët Rosé was the best champagne I tasted during my stay. Stroll around the garden, have lunch, drink champagne, and enjoy the art exhibition.

3) Hautvillers

Hautvillers is the birthplace of champagne. Monk Dom Pérignon contributed to the development of champagne (sparkling wine) (he did not invent champagne however) hence making Hautvillers the birthplace of Champagne. Visit his grave in the Hautvillers Abbey (Abbey of St Peter Hautvillers).

4) Rent a bike & visit the vineyards

Discover the vineyards by bike. I would suggest to rent an e-bike if you’re planning on climbing the hills like we did.

5) Go up in the air!

Not a fan of cycling? Have an amazing view of the Champagne vineyards from a hot air balloon!

6) Let’s Kayak!

Not a fan of floating or cycling? Then you can still do some kayaking and enjoy the beautiful views of Épernay!
