Dinant is a city in Belgium that is located on the river Meuse. It is also the city where Adolphe Sax is born. Here are my 7 must do’s for when in Dinant.
So with friends from Uni, we decided to visit Dinant. A little city in Belgium that has a lot of charm and is 1.5 hours drive away from Brussels. We’ve visited this small town in less than half a day! You can easily go to Namur after you’ve visited Dinant.
1) Rocher Bayard
So most people enter the town by driving under the Bayard Rock. This Rock is said to be split by the hoves of the horse Bayard. The road goes straight through the split rock. This is a special feeling.
2) The Meuse
So Dinant is split by the Meuse. If you cross the Meuse, you get an amazing view over the northern side of the city, the citadel and the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame. The bridge that you cross is named after Charles de Gaule. He saved the city from the Germans during WW1.
3) The Citadel of Dinant
The Meuse around Dinant gave the city a great trade position. To protect itself from intruders, the citizens build a citadel. The citadel is closed for visitors in January but is open in the other months. When we visited the citadel, it had snowed a little bit. So we decided to take the cable car instead of the slippery stairs. You’ll have an amazing view of the town when you’re at the top of the Citadel.
Entrance fee: €8.50
Inside the citadel, you’ll be able to learn more about the history of the city during World War 1.
4) Adolphe Sax
Dinant is also the birthplace of Adolphe Sax. It’s not that hard to tell. Almost every shop or cafe is named after him. There is even a square with a saxophone that can tell time or a bridge that is filled with saxophones. Besides that, you can also visit the birth home of Adolphe Saxe that lies in the Adolphe Sax street.
5) The Collegiate Church of Notre Dame
This church replaced a 10th-century church that collapsed in the 10th century. The church survived the attacks during WW1.

When we were in Dinant we thought this biscuit was some kind of “Speculaas” (a Belgian biscuit). It turns out the be a
7) Drink a Leffe
So Leffe is a small village that is part of Dinant. Leffe has its own abbey where they used to brew the beer Leffe. Today Leffe is brewed elsewhere but the abbey still exists acting as a museum.

I went a long time ago and forgot a bit how it was, I must admit. I didn’t know they had their own ‘couque’!
Yeah I thought it was speculoos but afterward, I learned it was something special from Dinant itself!

Ja inderdaad! Je kan het ook gerust koppelen met een dagje ergens te wandelen en erna in Dinant iets te gaan eten!
