Bedugul and Munduk | Bali

Going to Bedugul is a must. You can see the Ulun Danu Temple surrounded by water, you can visit the Candi Kuning fruit market, do some Monkey business and enjoy the swings at Buyan and Tamblingan Lake. We also visited the Munduk Moding plantation that has one hell of an infinity pool!

Bedugul

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan

You can enter the area of the Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, or Pura Bratan temple for just 30.000 Rp. The water temple is to honor the river goddess Dewi Danu. The temple is located on a small island in Lake Bratan. The irrigation of the rice throughout Bali uses the water from this lake. Lake Bratan is located 1.200 meters above sea level and gives an amazing view of the crater.

Fun fact: The Ulun Danu temple is represented on the 50.000 Rp. banknote.

Fruit market of Candi Kuning

A 5-minute drive away from this amazing place is the fruit market of Canikuning where you can taste all different sorts of fruits. We tasted the dragon fruit, snake fruit, the hairless kiwi and normal fruits. This area is also known for cultivating strawberries.

Monkey Forest

Before stopping at the famous viewpoint of the twin lakes, we came across some monkeys just right in front of the Buyan Lake. Another possibility is to visit the sacred monkey forest in Ubud, but I heard that the monkeys were more aggressive towards people there (getting into your bags I heard) and that the place is swarmed with tourists. The monkeys we saw, were just minding their own monkey business and swinging from tree to tree. Occasionally eating bananas and nuts.

Buyan and Tamblingan lake

Afterward, we went to a viewpoint right in the middle of the Buyan and Tamblingan Lake. There are several spots where you can swing over the lakes, sit in a nest, a star, a flower,… with an overview of the lakes. You give the owners a little “thank you for using your photo booths” when leaving the place. Our attraction stop was even building a bigger swing for future tourists, I found the little swing already exciting. The stress part is sitting on the swing, looking down in the valley and being pushed for the first time. After that first push, it’s just a normal swing.

Munduk

When preparing for travel, I always check out my fellow Instagrammers who have already visited that place. I came across some beautiful infinity pools in Bali and found one in particular very beautiful. I’ve asked the driver if we could visit that hotel, which was not on our planning. He agreed, and we went to the Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa. Their infinity pool has been selected as the world’s third top Infinity Pool by Asia Spa. Worth visiting, don’t you think?

We first stopped to have a look at the Bamboo hall in the hotel. It’s where most of the activities of the hotels are held. Next time I’ll come back to make my own Balinese kite but for now, I’ll just settle for a cup of coffee! The Bamboo hall also has two Rindiks, xylophones made from bamboo. Our chauffeur showed us some of his musical skills.

Later, we enjoyed ourselves a cup of Munduk coffee. The hotel produces specialty coffee together with the Munduk Coffee Company. As I’ve said earlier, I’m not a coffee lover but I was taken by surprise by the Luwak coffee, so I gave it a try. Verdict? The coffee smells and tastes really good and it is very soft on the tongue. Loved it. The coffee-making process was also very exciting to watch, pouring a cup of coffee with so much care. It made us savor our cup of coffee even more!

Afterward, we went to have a look at the infinity pool and it didn’t disappoint! The pool and jacuzzi have a panoramic view of the hills and mountains of Bali. Being up there was amazing.

Stop the car!

When leaving Munduk we bypassed a village that was celebrating the cremation of several family members and neighbors. We stepped outside of the car and followed the crowd. Every man was dressed in white clothing, women were dressed in colorful dresses. We felt like intruders at first, but the locals were immediately smiling at us and waving at us to join the ‘parade’.

Banjar Hot Springs

When the road was unblocked, we continued our tour to the Banjar Hot springs. The water in these springs is supposed to be able to cure diseases. The sulfuric water is of volcanic origin, the temperature of the water is therefore 32 degrees Celsius.

Tip: Do not wear your white swimming suit because the sulfuric water gives it an orange/reddish color, the color disappeared after a good shower.
