Things to do in Mombasa

1) Gate of Mombasa

The following day, we met two Dutch elderly couples in our hotel, and they gave us their private chauffeur to visit Mombasa. When you want to visit Mombasa, you must have a trustworthy chauffeur because the city can be dangerous sometimes. First, we visited the gate of Mombasa, which is located next to a park where hundreds of bats are living in the trees, hanging like bananas.

2) Ferry

Secondly, we saw the ferry that is famous from the book ‘The White Maasai’. A gigantic ferry filled with hundreds of people and cars crosses the harbor every hour.

3) Marketplace

We also passed by the marketplace, but we weren’t allowed to leave the car, as this place is not safe for tourists. We also had to lock our doors and close our windows.

4) Hindu temple

We also visited a Hindu temple! It was a small temple, but it was nothing compared to the temples I’ve seen in Sri Lanka.

5) Fort Jesus

Fort Jesus used to be the protection of the Old Port of Mombasa. It’s also a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is one of the most outstanding and well-preserved examples of 16th-century Portuguese military fortification.

6) Old town

Lastly, we saw the old town that is within walking distance of Fort Jesus. The old town consists of some old buildings, but that’s it.

Fun Fact: Hakuna Matata really does mean: No worries!

What to pack for Mombasa?

Light, breathable clothing is best due to the tropical climate, and do safaris in neutral colours to blend in (beige, brown, and green). Make sure to bring these top 5 items on your safari trip:

  • A pair of binoculars: to see all wildilfe upclose.
  • Camera: to take amazing photos of your trip!
  • Sunscreen: don’t get sunburned
  • Malaria pills & mosquito repellent: There is a high risk of malaria throughout Kenya. Prevention through malaria tablets and strict mosquito repellent measures (DEET, mosquito nets) is essential. The risk is highest during and after the rainy season (June-December).
  • Hat or cap: for sun protection
