10 must do’s in Lake Como | Italy

Como is worth the day trip from Milan as it’s only a 1-hours drive away from the city. Here are my must do’s when at Lake Como, Italy

1) Monumento ai Caduti per Servizio

Walking from the train station, you’ll pass the Monumento ai Caduti per Servizio, a sculpture of two hands. It is in honor of disabled service people.

2) Lake Como

The second thing you’ll see in Lake Como is the lake itself! If you’re lucky you’ll see some swans on the lake.

3) Tempio Voltiano

The Volta Temple is a museum in honor of Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electrical battery and an inhabitant of Como.

4) Monument to European Resistance

This monument is a commemoration to the victims of World War II and resistance movements. Stones from Nazi concentration camps and Hiroshima were used to build the monument.

5) Life Electric

Life Electric is another sculpture in honor of Alessandro Volta.

6) Duomo of Como

The Duomo of Como is the last Gothic church built in Italy. The cathedral has a white marble facade and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

7) Basilica of Sant’Abbondio

The Basilica of Sant’Abbondio is one of the oldest churches in Lombardy. The church is from the 5th century AD.

8) Forte di Fuentes

We didn’t do this but you can visit the ruins of this fortress. It’s one of the last remains of the Spanish dominance in Italy.

9) Take the Funicular up to Brunate

Brunate is a town up the mountains. Just take the funicular train to the top to have an amazing view of Como.

10) The Villas Of Lake Como

Lake Como has amazing mansions and villas. We were looking for the villa of George Clooney but his mansion is further up the lake.  Apparently, you can visit 3 villas in Como: Villa Melzi, Villa Balbianello (Star Wars wedding filmed), and Villa Carlotta.
