Exploring Thailand

Practical Travel Tips Before you go

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s most popular travel destinations. It’s known for its vibrant street life, spectacular beaches, lush jungles, and rich cultural heritage. From exploring Bangkok‘s bustling markets and grand temples, to relaxing on the idyllic islands of the south or trekking through northern hill-tribe country, this Thailand Travel Guide brings together the best places to visit, itinerary ideas, and essential travel tips. You’ll find practical information on transportation, where to stay, seasonal weather, cultural customs, and how to make the most of your time in the Land of Smiles.

Best time to visit Thailand?

The dry season (November-February) offers the best weather across most of the country. We visited Thailand in September. We had some small rain showers in the afternoon and good temperatures.

Tip: There is a time difference (GMT+7)

How many days do you need in Thailand?

7-10 days is ideal for experiencing a mix of city life, culture, and beaches, while 2 weeks allows for deeper exploration. However, I can easily go back for another trip and see Pai in the north or more of the islands in the south. So Thailand can also be done in 3 weeks or, like most backpackers, for a month.

Visa Thailand

Most travelers do not require a visa to enter Thailand for tourism for stays of up to 60 days. A valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity and a return ticket are required. Always check the latest requirements for your nationality before traveling.

Currency & Voltage

Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB). Cash is widely used, especially in smaller towns, but credit cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants. ATMs are available in most cities and towns.

Thailand utilizes plug types A, B, C, and O. It operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency. If your devices are dual voltage (100-240V), use a plug adapter. If your devices are 110V (US and Japan), you need a converter to prevent damage.

What should I pack for Thailand?

Light, breathable clothing is best due to the tropical climate. When visiting temples, shoulders and knees should be covered. Use my ultimate packing list to make packing easy!

Transportation

Popular transport includes grab taxis, private drivers, tuk-tuks, planes, trains, boats, and buses. We doubted about taking the night train from Bangkok to Chiang Rai but opted for a cheaper flight with shorter duration. We did take the evening bus from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai.

Medical

It’s also recommended to be vaccinated when you’re visiting Malaysia. It’s recommended to have the following vaccinations: Tetanus (lockjaw), Diphtheria, Polio, Chickenpox, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B.

Malaria is present in Thailand to a limited extent, primarily in remote forest and border areas (such as Myanmar, Cambodia, and the far south). The cities of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, and the major islands are malaria-free. Protective equipment (DEET, mosquito nets, and comfortable clothing) is crucial.

Salmonella

On our first evening in Chiang Mai, we went to eat dinner, and we all ate the same dish. Except for the fact that I ordered an orange juice smoothie. When I drank it, I noticed a strange taste. I stopped drinking it and ordered a bottle of water. That night was dreadful! I was cold but also hot and sweaty (I had a fever). I didn’t sleep at all and spent the night chasing the toilet. The next morning, we went to Doi Inthano,n but I was so sick! (see photo) If I ate something, I had to go to the toilet immediately. Worst night and day of my life. I spent my last week in Thailand surviving on diarrhea pills to help me through the day. When I came back to Belgium, the doctor told me that I just had to go to the hospital immediately instead of going to the mountains. But hey, after 3 months, I’m finally Salmonella-free…
